This motel converted into apartments gave us a big surprise. It was almost too BIG a surprise! The fire had spread from one apartment up through the attic. There were no fire stops so it was an easy march for the fire from one end of the building to the other.
I was cutting through the roof, but, smoke was inhibiting our view. As I swung the axe, it felt like it hit something solid. The next two or three blows felt the same way. A gust of wind suddenly blew the smoke away. My partner stopped me from taking another swing. I was hitting an illegal one inch natural gas line running along the peak of the roof! The notches I had accidently cut into the pipe told us the story. About one more swing and we would have been blown off the roof by an explosion!
