"We Better Lay A Line!"

"We Better Lay A Line!"
A late night call to a night club on fire pretty much means it is a "working" fire! Again in this case it was. My captain, who worked ten years at the busiest fire house in Wichita, was the coolest "head" I knew. Nothing shook him. I stood on the tailboard my heart pounding waiting for the order to lay a hose line from the fire hydrant. The pumper’s door slowly opened, the “Capt.” casually strolled around the front of the machine, then down the engine's length while putting his coat and helmet  on. Finally, he got back to me and said, “Well, (long pause) I guess we better lay a line” He spoke slowly, deliberately, and not a hint of any excitement in his voice.
