"Sunday Morning on Vine Street"
Reading the Sunday Paper at the station was interrupted by this house fire. The fire in the attached garage was beginning to spread into the kitchen. My job was to protect the interior of the house when the outside crew opened the big garage door to attack the fire. This procedure created a small backdraft as the oxygen from outside fueled the smoldering fire. At this point, I just rolled over and opened the nozzle. The real story is: Though I painted this showing an air pack on, this fire was before everybody wore air packs, I was actually "eating" lots of smoke!
My goal as I painted this picture was for the viewer to really "feel" the heat of the fire. As with most movies showing fire scenes, it is difficult to show the fire and the real thickness of the smoke. The smoke displaces the air and it hard to even see your hand in front of your face.
This is an original hand painted acrylic on hand-stretched, double primed canvas over hand-built stretcher bars. This picture is protected with a minimum of two coats of UV high gloss varnish.
